Nigeria is Africa’s most populous nation, and although it enjoys considerable oil and gas resources, its health indicators are among the worst in the world. The total fertility rate has remained constant at 5.7 since 2003. The combination of Nigeria’s large population and an adult HIV prevalence of 3.6 percent has resulted in the second highest HIV/AIDS burden in the world. HIV prevalence is nearly three times higher among women ages 15 to 24 than among men in the same age range, and approximately 360,000 children are living with HIV. In August 2010, a Partnership Framework was signed by the Government of Nigeria, the U.S. Government, and other stakeholders that provides a five-year joint strategic plan to support a collaborative response to HIV.
