Malawi is a small, land-locked country in Southern Africa. The latest estimates of Malawi’s health workforce in the 2000s demonstrate a critical shortage of health workers. The country is experiencing a severe epidemic, and AIDS continues to be the leading cause of mortality. In addition, the country has a high unmet need for family planning, high fertility rates, and a high maternal mortality ratio. To address the many health challenges facing the country, the U.S. Government and other donors are working with the Government of Malawi (GOM) to provide integrated health, population, and nutrition services. In fact, the clients of family planning services and clients of HIV/AIDS services share many common needs and concerns.
