The compendium identifies 31 innovative HIV program models across sub-Saharan Africa that combine the following gender approaches:
A categorization of practices and programs by variables such as program content, geographic region/country, epidemic stage, target population, service delivery type, as well as identifying it as a good and promising programmatic practice.

AIDSTAR-One Field Office Opened in Honduras

Rapid Assessment of HIV Services Conducted in Honduras
At the request of the Honduran Health Secretariat, AIDSTAR-One conducted a rapid assessment in early 2009 to gauge the quality and access to HIV and AIDS services at public health centers for comprehensive care (CAIs) for people living with HIV in Honduras. Information gathered through this assessment will guide the development of strategies to strengthen service delivery at the CAIs and increase utilization within the communities where they are located.

AIDSTAR-One Summaries of Lancet HIV Prevention Series
The Lancet, in conjunction with UNAIDS (http://www.unaids.org/en/KnowledgeCentre/Resources/FeatureStories/archive/2008/20080806_Lancet.asp), issued a series of articles beginning in August 2008 to coincide with the International AIDS Conference in Mexico City.
Putting prevention at the forefront of HIV/AIDS.
As a preface to the other articles, the authors note the failure of HIV prevention efforts to prevent 2.5 million annual infections, and highlight key considerations for future HIV prevention efforts.
The history and challenge of HIV prevention
This paper reviews the last 25 years of the HIV and AIDS epidemic, drawing conclusions about the way forward. Current prevention services currently reach less than 10% of individuals at risk worldwide. Yet, increased resources will not suffice. The authors discuss several elements of successful responses: improved knowledge of the epidemic in individual countries, national leadership and activism, combination prevention, synergies between prevention, care and treatment services, and the importance of strengthening health systems.
Biomedical interventions to prevent HIV infection: evidence, challenges and way forward.
Biomedical HIV prevention interventions seek to reduce HIV susceptibility or infectiousness, or to otherwise interrupt HIV transmission. The authors review available evidence regarding the following interventions: barrier methods, control of other sexually transmitted infections, male circumcision, antimicrobial products, antiretroviral medications as prevention, and HIV vaccines. Both research and implementation pose a range of challenges. Effective biomedical intervention(s) must be combined with behavioral strategies for a comprehensive HIV prevention approach.
