AIDSTAR-One has developed a technical brief summarizing the World Health Organization’s (WHO) New Pediatric HIV Treatment Guidelines. The brief describes WHO recommendations and provides links to useful resources for HIV/AIDS program implementers.
In late 2008, the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) reached its goal of supporting HIV treatment for 2 million people globally, a number it plans to double by 2014. Country-level programs also seek to scale up treatment to reach more people who need it. Growing demand for treatment puts new strains on public health resources, which makes it critical to identify and share effective and cost-efficient approaches for service delivery. Treatment gaps—such as reaching rural populations far from medical facilities—and emerging issues also require new strategies so that high-quality services can be maintained.
AIDSTAR-One provides a platform for global technical leadership and knowledge management to support the piloting of high-quality treatment services and bring programs to scale. AIDSTAR-One also provides technical assistance in strategic planning and implementation to U.S. Government partners working at the country level and to host-country institutions to develop and support HIV treatment efforts. AIDSTAR-One seeks to provide:
- Resources in HIV treatment for USAID, other U.S. Government agencies, and partners, including a database of good and promising programmatic practices and technical briefs to pinpoint specific treatment topics, such as pediatric treatment and adherence to treatment.
- Support to strengthen the programmatic content, quality, and sustainability of treatment services.
- Technical assistance to develop or strengthen existing HIV treatment programs through strategic planning and implementation support.
