"
I am very grateful for this tool. I was going through it yesterday and thought it important, and something that is not discussed often. It is important to encourage health staff to improve WASH as well as very important issues such as adherence. Also it looks at ways to provide safe water to PLWHA. After attending the training I am trying to implement some of the key steps at my own facility.

- Daphine Moseti, WASH Training Participant, Kenya

AIDSTAR-One has recently finalized a new training resource that aims to address problems around water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) at health facilities to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV and their families entitled Improving the Lives of People Living with HIV (PLWH) through WASH: Water Sanitation and Hygiene.

This comprehensive, 3-4 day curriculum has two goals:

1. To build the capacity of individual health care providers to adopt WASH approaches.
2. To provide guidance to program planners and administrators in developing facility-wide WASH approaches.

The curriculum provides detailed activities to improve WASH systems in health facilities by ensuring a safe and sufficient supply of water, sanitation, and basic hygiene practices exist at the facility level. In resource-limited countries, many essential practices are lacking in the majority of health care facilities making adequate patient care more difficult, particularly for people living with HIV (PLWH) and others who are more likely to get an infection. The curriculum is divided into two guides: the Trainer Guide and the Participant Technical Resource Guide.

In February 2011, AIDSTAR-One, with support from the Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation (MOPHS), piloted the WASH training curriculum in Kenya. View the Kenya Assessment Pilot Report.

In April 2011, AIDSTAR-One, with support from the Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH), piloted the training curriculum in Ethiopia. View the Ethiopia Assessment Pilot Report.

Trainer Guide

The Training Guide provides an easy to follow training template suitable for a 3- to 4-day training targeting health workers and supervisors at health clinics. The document includes 17 sessions with clear goals, objectives and activities that can be adapted to multiple country settings. The training guide also includes two annexes: 1) Annex One includes Handouts and Job Aids crafted to provide practical educational messages to promote safe water, sanitation, and hygiene at health clinics; 2) Annex Two provides a country adaptation guideline.

Participant Guide

The Participant Technical Resource Guide provides practical and evidence-based information for WASH implementation in all types of health facilities in resource-limited countries, focusing on increasing the health of PLWH. This guide is developed as generic training material. The situation of WASH may vary between countries and between health facilities within a country. The users should adapt the contents from this manual for their individual training needs using Annex 2 mentioned in the previous paragraph.
